Wide Area Induction Network...

Image
Yesterday, one of my FB friends and an engineer posted on her wall that how magnificent it would be that, if electricity could be transmitted without wires.

I have been having this thought often too, after coming to Pune from Bombay, as power outages are quite common in Pune. Specially on Thursdays, when they take weekly routine maintenance. This Thursday, they cut the power at 1000 hrs and it was restored only at 2030 hrs. This was horrible...

I commented on her post, that how about a "Wide Area Induction Network"...And I recieved a reply that "WAIN" would be a great idea...

The name suggests everything, you build an induction network and see to it that loss of energy is minimum through it...And yes it has to be wide enough to make a sense out of it...

I started searching on the topic, and found that people at MIT are already working on it (where else, after all) and they have managed to transmit energy through a distance of 7 feet...

MIT calls it "WiTricity"…

An Old post lost in Draft- 2 /THE SUNDAY RITUAL ! ! !

Sunday is what everybody looks forward to, right from Monday!
Same is the case with me, thats the day when you do so many things which you cant do on a weekday because of obvious reasons, but theres one ritual due to which Sunday is more important for me....

And thats, washing my weekly quota of clothes! Yes, thats true!
Right from my college days, the sunday was reserved for washing the whole quota of the weekly clothes, and even after almost 10 years, the sunday has hardly changed for me, as far as this ritual is concerned.

When I was at home, during my school days, apart from my undies, I never touched any piece of cotton. And all of a sudden when I came to hostel, apart from grappling with tough questions of Applied Mech and Strenght of Mat(Some of them still go over my head, never thought that a bending of beam would be so analytical!), had to accept this bitter reality of washing my own clothes, myself ie).

While there were laundry around, where many of my friends used to get th…

Why we invest, and why we don’t- Bharti Jacob- Co-founder Seedfund in Economic Times-13th August 2010

As Co-founder of Seedfund, one of India's most active early-stage venturefund, Bharati Jacob occupies a vantage point in the country'sentrepreneurial ecosystem. An alumnus of the Wharton School, she was earlier onthe team of Infinity Ventures and has since led investments in a clutch of hotstart-ups such as ticketing company Redbus.in and budget healthcare chainVaatsalya.

In this column written exclusively for The Economic Times, Ms Jacobexplains why entrepreneurs need to understand the investor's point ofview.

On return on investment

As early-stageinvestors, we are looking for the Holy Grail — a deal that will multiplyour money such that we get '50 or '100 back for every rupee we invest. For acompany to provide such returns to its investors – it should eitheraddress a large volume and low margin market or a highly profitable nichemarket. Since we invest to exit, the company must have the potential to list onthe stock market or be acquired profitably!

On value…

An old post lost in Draft- 1

I yesterday reached the 12000 hits mark on my blog- http://realmccoy2k.blogspot.com

It has been 5.5 years of blogging since I started in July 2005 and this is my 658th post.

In fact I can easily claim to be one of the pioneering bloggers of India :) (Who's father, what goes...)

The numbers are important but whats more important is that this is one activity of mine which I never let go into oblivion, though a couple of years I have been pretty dormant but I never let this blog of mine die.

In fact there is some sort of relation between July and me and its kinda intriguing when most of the important things in my life started kind of in July...

This Blog started in July 2005...

One of my relationship kind of started in July...

I quit last July to work on PriceSticker...

I got offer letter of my biggest career break in July...

There could be other things also which I dont remember now, but this Blog is very close to me...

I hope to continue writing not because I am a good writer but because I l…

Jab We Met- 16th July 2011

Image
The title of the post will sound mis-leading to many of my regular readers, so to make them avoid any disappointment after about 5 minutes of reading, I want to make it clear right at the onset that this is about 6 engineering college-mates meeting after more than a decade...
The event was originally scheduled for 9th July 2011, and was postponed to 16th July 2011, as for a couple of members it was not possible to join at that date...And guess, whatever happens, happens for good...Parag Srivastava could come to meet us due to that and also Avinash, who just came from USofA a few days back...
Myself and Atanu Sir used to regularly discuss the people whom we could get to the event, from Pune as well as Bombay, but it seemed the total tally could be finalised only on the D-Day, as lots of people were still un-certain...
And so around 1600 hrs on 16th July, it became final that 6 of us would be meeting...
Parag, Avinash, Manish Sir, Mitesh Sir, Atanu Sir and myself...
It started raining in the…
