The Cliffhanger-And the bout of craziness

Well, I adore beaches but I love mountains…and this love affair started from Jabalpur where my childhood and teenage years were spent. The city has too many small mountains, and I climbed all of them quite regularly all through my stay over there..

A couple of them were near to my home and they were my favorites, and whenever I will reach there top, one of the mountains which was out of the city limit will beckon me and challenge to climb him…..I always vouched that one day I will do that…

But that guy was so far that it will took me many hours just to reach there, and that too by climbing all the mountains which come in the way and to avoid exhaustion from sun, I need to finish my mission before it gets too hot..

So one day, after my 11th standard exam, I decided to accept that challenge. I told my mom the night before that I will leave the home for my routine morning walk a bit early and she should not worry….And I knew that it wont be a bit early but in fact in the dead of the night…

So lo and behold, I left my home at 2.30 am in the dead of the night, crossed the road and started my ascent. To this day I still wonder that how could I do that. But I was not all foolish, I chose the fool moon night, so the sky was decently lit, but still imagine climbing a mountain with bushes and big rocks in the dead of the night, all alone….CRAZY…

So it was quite decent going early, I climbed the first one easily, descended safely. The most difficult part is to descend as the chances of fall are more while you start descending…

I had to walk about 3 to 4 kms over rough terrain to reach my next mountain, which was more of a hill…I thought that this shall be easy one, as it was a hill but it was the most treacherous…The terrain was very loose and the stones were kind of rolling…

I was eager to finish the mission within the stipulated time and was just moving on and on… And then I slipped, and was about to fall flat on a rock , with my face longing to kiss it and to avoid that I put my palm in front of my face and survived. My palm got buried in that rock and there was deep gush and a stream of blood flowing. Still I held on to that rock somehow almost in the cliff-hanger style as otherwise I would have sliiped down to almost the bottom of the hill, the rocks were so loose..

It was paining like hell, but I just hold. Slowly gathered myself up, and stood. The wound was worse than I expected and it was like hell. My jeans was torned, and there bruises all over my hand. And all this while at around 4 am in the morning, out of civilization, almost in the midst of the jungle.
I tried stopping the flow of the blood with my hanky and decided to move on, though I just desperately wanted to sit down there only, and may be cry for a minute or two to minimize the pain..

But then, I dint came all that far in the middle of the night to sit and cry and abandon my mission half way…and now since it was paining so badly, I resolved that even if I had to chop off my palm I would first go and climb that mountain and then look after that wound.

I cant believe but the anguish which set there because of the injury, egged me on and on and drove me faster… By the first stroke of sunlight I was below that monster which used to mock at me every time I used to see it…
And then my dream came true, I started the ascend… You cant imagine the thrill and the rush of adrenaline I reached the top and cried aloud “yes” four or five times and threw my fist in the air, with my palm getting worse.

Well, that mountain has the best preserved “anti-aircraft station” of WWII era on top of it and I climbed on that station, and sat there for 10 mins and savored the feeling…. It was done, the challenge was over and I won. I could manage to come back in the nick of the time, and straight went to wash that wound of my palm. The gash was deep into the palm and it was so visible. Well, I told my mom that I fell and went to doc to get the injection….

That gash is still so very prominent on my right palm and guess will always stay there…and every time I look at my palm, that night becomes so vivid in my memories…

All of us have bout of craziness sometimes in our life, I had one that day…And the souvenir will remain with me forever..
